Meta announces always online DRM for all existing and future Quest VR devices (mixed-news.com)

Meta sneakily introduced “Platform Integrity Attestation API” which basically calls home to see whether the user has a valid license to play.

This means that to run apps user has to have online connection to perform an integrity test. Whether it’s only a test on launch or continues call home like Denuvo-like DRMs is not yet clear. This could also mean that modified headsets could fail to pass this test essentially closing down the device for modifications that could damage “platform integrity”. Not all details are clear yet but this doesn’t look good.

Currently it’s optional and up to app developers to enable it.

Still waiting for valve to do an all in one headset

I’m so sad Nofio essentially produced vaporware.

They have Valve Index.

utopiah@lemmy.ml on 16 Apr 10:09 collapse

Which isn’t standalone (or “all in one” as I imagine they meant). I have an Index and a SteamDeck. I can’t wait to buy something at the intersection of both.

I really do hope that deckard will include inside-out tracking even if it also supports base station tracking

Didn’t realize how far back the feed was reaching because everything was limited to a handful of communities on my feed.

Meta’s drm is ass if this has existed for years. You can play pirated games like eleven table tennis online and walkabaout mini golf

cyberpunk007@lemmy.ca on 16 Apr 07:53 next collapse

And this is why I never considered buying one, because meta owns it. There was also the time they forced login with a meta or Facebook account or something, then they reverted that. But these kinds of things could happen at any point in time.

And banning if you where not the owner of the device. So you couldn’t even share it with your friends.

I am still and will wait for a much more open platform that is Linux compatible.

ObsidianZed@lemmy.world on 16 Apr 20:49 collapse

Fingers crossed for Steam’s new headset.

kylian0087@lemmy.dbzer0.com on 17 Apr 12:31 collapse

Yeah. Often being open and good at the same time doesn’t happen. I hope steam will change that.

cyberpunk007@lemmy.ca on 20 Apr 19:08 collapse

Yeah, this is my exact hope. I was initially considering the index but don’t want to deal with beacons and whatnot. Metas sets seem pretty good so if valves next gen is anything comparable I’ll probably get one.

Steam deck is a banger, I love this thing. If the same care and attention is brought to an index 2, slam dunk.

Dr_Vindaloo@lemmy.ml on 16 Apr 18:25 next collapse

I hate that quest devices are the only reasonably priced and widely available ones. Everything else is either super expensive, way too old, or doesn’t run standalone Android with sideloading access (meaning no true ownership of games you paid for via pirated copies).

Just lost wmr to windows updates too, I’d expect more shit like this now that theyre better monopolized

coolusername@lemmy.ml on 17 Apr 12:48 collapse

i dont support meta quest 2 because they support genocide

No disagreement here.
