URnetwork?

Searching F-droid today for ‘vpn’, something called URNetwork came up, touting itself as better then a VPN, and sounding frankly too good to be true. Duckduckgo searches are finding very little not either going to them (ur.io, or their github, etc) or some site called Product Hunt that I’ve never come across before. Nothing useful or that gives me confidence even that this isn’t a scam.

Does anyone know anything about this product?

“Better than a VPN” but it looks more like some decentralised social and content network. So not a replacement or alternative to a VPN in any way. It just preys on the people who already bought the “VPNs make you private online” marketing.

Looks like a silicon valley VC cash grab.

When they say "All the content in the world’’ and compare it to a VPN, I take that to be promising secure anonymous access to all the existing content of the web not just some new social network’s own content.

secure anonymous access

A VPN doesn’t provide this on its own. Nothing does.

Sorry, my wording was unclear. Their vpn verbiage suggests to me they are promoting access to the existing content of the web. Secure and anonymous they claim in other website verbiage.

  • F-Droid is not a shop.
  • URnetwork looks like a decentralised VPN provider.
  • All VPNs providers are a scam: see this on YouTube or PeerTube.

Connecting to any trustworthy VPN at the very least:

  1. Encrypts your connection entirely and ensures you are connected to a party you trust
  2. Limits snooping in your traffic to one party you trust

Which is objectively not a scam and a desirable thing to do. Not as desirable as hosting your own VPN, but 100% better than not having one, no matter what some guy on the internet says.

Objectively a centralised VPN provider cannot prove it is trustworthy but I can guaranteed not paying.

Which day did you go to check their servers?

Ah, I was there just yesterday, had a pint with the frankfurt server 03, the poor thing said 01 won’t talk to it anymore. Very sad.

Havent done that. But I did generate a new account number then sent them cash through the mail from the U.S. without a return address. And the balance got applied to the account. I appreciate being able to generate an anonymous account, and the ability to pay for the account in an anonymous way.

F-Droid is not a shop

Not sure why this is a response to my query.

markinov@lemmygrad.ml on 20 Apr 15:08 collapse

3rd point depends on how the VPN advertises itself. If it advertises itself as nordVPN used to do then it’s a scam. If it advertises itself what a vpn actually does then it’s not a scam

Another crap like Hola VPN, it’s free, because it don’t use public servers, but the bandwith of its users, simply exchanging their IP. A terrible risky system. DON’T USE IT.
