Hey, is anyone associated Defcon ’26 in here? I read with fascination about this year’s badge, and I want one. I’m not able to attend, and TBH it would be wasted on me - it’s not my field, or even my particular area of interest - but the technology in the badge looks fantastic and widely useful. Maybe Huang will sell the boards with the chip in the future, but have the Defcon organizers thought about making the detachable part of the badge available to the general public? The badges are configurable to represent special groups - VIPs, speakers, attendees … maybe sell a badge for non-attendee collectors?

It’s a long shot, but I thought it was worth asking the question.

My search for a defcon community came up empty, and I know privacy isn’t exactly apropos for my Q but I guess the overlap is pretty large.

Most of the time you can pick up badges afterwards on second hand markets, sometimes defcons official shop has some leftovers.

I have a strong feeling the chips will be available for purchase afterwards. This whole thing feels like a product launch.

It’s literally the test run/marketing push for this open source chip. Yes they will be available outside of just being built into the badge. On other forums there are people who pre-ordered the chip (before it was announced to be used in the badge) who are saying they have confirmation their order shipped.

The chip and the device on the badge are different things, tho, right? The board on the badge has a QR code reading camera, IO ports, memory, battery, and LEDs (? maybe the LEDs are integrated in the badge). Myunderstanding was that the chip was the brain but that the Defcon badge integrates it with a board containing features which makes it a complete useful device.

Just left defcon, they’re going to list some leftovers on the defcon online store.

No problem, I think they said that sometime next week, you’ll be able to order them

Oh, also…. how was it?

It was a lot of fun. I didn’t see a lot of it because I went to a bunch of talks, but the villages I went to were awesome. I also came home with a lot of new toys. The goons were all super nice as well, which I was worried about since I heard they have been rude in the past.

If you go, have a budget in mind!
