Looking for a "Family-Hub", like Alexa Show(?)

Hey everyone,

last weekend at a friends house I saw the Alexa Show (I think?) in action. It was used as a digital family-calendar, weather forecast and music player. It sat there on the fridge like an old school family planer. The music-player wouldnt be relevent to me. But an digital calendar in the kitchen with weather forecast looks really appealing. Do you probably know a privacy-friendly and suitable project with the possibility to implement my CalDav-Calendar(s)? Probably open Source? And without a lot of tinkering? (:

A fair amount of tinkering needed, but a raspberry pi + display can accomplish this if you don’t need the voice assistant.

(Spoiler alert, he uses Dakboard)

No voice assitance needed! Thanks Ill look into this

Another DIY option to look at is Mycroft. They used to sell devices, but they’ve since stopped all development as of 2023. There’s likely still a community tinkering away, so I’d imagine you could still run your own if you wanted.

Maybe something like the seeedstudio sensecap indicator?

There is only the 4" version right? I was looking for a bigger old day Kitchen calendar sized tool. But thanks for your idea :)

To the best of my knowledge, that’s the only one they have.

nextcloud comes to mind, but don’t know what alexa show is

Actionschnils@feddit.org on 01 Apr 23:33 collapse

I dont know exactly too what the alexa show really is, to be honest. But my friends are using it mostly as a digital display for their synchronized calendars and the weather forecast. Like a paper based family planer and a weather station for your kitchen. Yeah, i can do it paper based too. But Im way to lazy to keep a calendar up to date with all this daily tasks in modern family life. :)

ReversalHatchery@beehaw.org on 02 Apr 04:54 collapse

yeah, that’s nextcloud. but how do they input data? I guess its touch based, but is it a touch screen with on-screen keyboard (an android tablet with a web browser could replace that) or do they use a pen, or voice, or something else?

Actionschnils@feddit.org on 02 Apr 19:22 collapse

They only showed the voice-controll once. But for me, a input possibilty wouldnt be needed much. It shall just show our calendar, the clock and the weather forecast (: Probably would an old (forked)android tablet be enough. Ill look into this
