A book on escaping surveillance capitalism/the broligarchy

I’m a former journalist, and created a free resource called DISENGAGE: Opting Out—and Finding New Options—to Reclaim Your Life from Spammers, Scammers, Intrusive Marketers and Big Tech.

It’s available in PDF and full text on the website, plus EPUB at Barnes & Noble, Kobo, Smashwords, and other retailers.

It costs $0. No email needed, no tracking, no affiliate links. It was a passion project and I’m just trying to get the word out.

(If you know anyone in the press who may want a hardcopy, i printed up a couple dozen in print format on my own dime…just let me know!)

Enjoy!

Thanks! That’s an alias account. Normally I’d use a masked email, but for the press I wanted something a bit more pro looking. If it starts getting spam, it’s easy to delete/change.

Thank you. I have saved the post, but it seems the publishing website doesn’t like TOR exit nodes? I can’t seem to reach the page through TOR. I’ll try again later

Corduroy_Pillows_Making_Headlines@hexbear.net on 08 Apr 03:38 collapse

Oh no! Heck if I know…it’s just a Wix site. If you want to share a (masked!) email, I can email you the EPUB or PDF directly. I’m at punchinguppress@proton.me. Sorry about that!

Thank you, I’ll get to it shortly. Dang it’s times like this that make me wish I was running Qubes but alas…

Also, you really shouldn’t give out your email like that. Head to SimpleLogin or Addy and get yourself an email alias too

My pleasure, thanks for sharing all this important knowledge!

PS: I have few related things on fabien.benetou.fr/…/DigitalSelfSovereignty so I’d be curious to hear your opinion on it.

Wow, that’s so thorough! It’s great. I also tried your Beyond Monopoly videos but they are way too advanced for me! :)

utopiah@lemmy.ml on 10 Apr 07:31 collapse

Ah… thanks! Well let me ask then, if there was another “Beyond Monopoly” video that could be less “advanced” what would you like it to be about?

Corduroy_Pillows_Making_Headlines@hexbear.net on 10 Apr 16:31 collapse

Hmm…I’d say solutions for people who are not as tech savvy, and how to implement them. Even things as simple as how to change your default browser and search engine, suggestions for different OS’s and how to install them on any kind of computer, different options for Microsoft software, etc. For example, I’m on a Mac just because it’s still good and I don’t want to pay for a new one…I’d love either some simple ways to “harden” it and/or install Linux.

BUT…your audience is obviously more tech savvy and that’s OK too! I think we need info for all levels.

Wonderful, I can do that! I indeed assume that people just don’t “want” to install Linux because they think Windows, or other Microsoft products, is “good enough” for them but maybe they just don’t know how or imagine they don’t have the ability to do so. That’s a great suggestion I’ll try to address it soon, thanks!

Corduroy_Pillows_Making_Headlines@hexbear.net on 11 Apr 18:18 collapse

Yes, I’m one of them, haha! It would be great to have Linux or a privacy OS…though I haven’t found a privacy OS I think will be any good.

As you can see, the book is aimed more at newbies (and people with low-medium level tech knowledge) like myself. <img alt="doggirl-lol" src="https://hexbear.net/api/v3/image_proxy?url=https%3A%2F%2Fchapo.chat%2Fpictrs%2Fimage%2F2ef1b9a6-0b24-4888-9ba5-eef79f591db2.png">

Hey dude, I’m interested in an EPUB copy. And I’ll share it with others who will benefit.

How about this for an alt email: dontsellmydata@tuta.com 😂

Hi! Tried a few options to download the epub and they all required login Is there one that doesn’t or it’ll have to settle with PDF?

Corduroy_Pillows_Making_Headlines@hexbear.net on 11 Apr 18:17 next collapse

I can send you an EPUB directly! Later (when I have time) I’ll put a button on there for direct EPUB download as well as the various stores. You can email me at punchinguppress@proton.me if you feel comfortable doing so, or I’ll post again when EPUB is on the site.

Hi! I finally got the EPUB onto the site as a direct download.

I’ve been doing what’s in the guide for several years but its good to see a well structured and well presented resource like this anyway.

Theyve convinced normie that his valuable resources are valueless, and absent a better role model that won’t change (he’s not the type who thinks from first principles)
