it seems like rethinkdns is the best non-root firewall now. adaway+afwall if rooted.

yamaonan@lemmy.world on 23 Dec 02:23 next collapse

Thanks for the RethinkDNS referral, albeit a bit of a learning curve. I had been using DDG protection for a while (out of laziness), but started to wonder if it cut the mustard.

hexagonwin@lemmy.sdf.org on 23 Dec 03:03 collapse

Does DDG provide protection system wide? If it’s only the browser I believe Firefox with uBO or Cromite would be better?

yamaonan@lemmy.world on 23 Dec 03:18 collapse

DDG has app tracking protection, which runs whether the browser is open or not.

Do you know by any chance what is the best root firewall the block trackers? preferably something opensource

hexagonwin@lemmy.sdf.org on 23 Dec 03:02 collapse

I usually use AdAway for this. When installing a new app, use PCAPdroid and AdAway’s logger to find tracker servers apps connect to that isn’t blocked by AdAway’s default lists and block them manually. (And don’t enable internet connection at all unless it’s really necessary, using AFWall)

Debloating apps using LuckyPatcher before all this is also useful, like there’s no reason to have bytedance sdk running. Though it’s arguable that LuckyPatcher itself isn’t really trustworthy, so I usually have it disabled (by Android; using adb or using something like the ‘Blocker’ app) and enable it only when I need it.

sun_is_ra@sh.itjust.works on 23 Dec 04:25 collapse

so every time an app updates, you’d have to run luckypatcher?

i would say netGuard is “the best non-root firewall now”

but it’s been years since i stopped using rethink and i never needed to go back to it

hexagonwin@lemmy.sdf.org on 23 Dec 03:06 collapse

I seem to remember hearing NetGuard doesn’t work properly for some configuration and that it doesn’t support IPv6 properly (?) Or maybe it was something VPN/Wireguard related… My memory is a bit vague

AFAIK TrackerControl was also based on NetGuard.

merde@sh.itjust.works on 23 Dec 03:33 collapse

ipv6 works fine

i also use wireguard with no problems

i use and used it on different phone brands and tablets too

🤷

Isn’t that exactly to be expected, and part of the whole point of the thing? It’s preventing connections to abusive service endpoints, of course it’s going to break things. The idea is that the things it breaks are not desirable, even when it means a game doesn’t work anymore. You have to choose which you want more: privacy, or playing that game.

MonkderVierte@lemmy.zip on 23 Dec 12:57 collapse

TC is not for webbrowsers. Disable the app with the big fat warning box in TC and good.

If you want adblocking in the web, use a browser with adblocking capabilities. Firefox, Cromite, Duckduckgo browser, to name a few.

Games, don’t see how, except maybe MMORPG, since TC utilizes a internal VPN, like all other rootless filters.

MeowerMisfit817@lemmy.world on 23 Dec 14:07 collapse

Thanks. Also, DuckDuckGo’s adblockers don’t seem to work anymore.

Is it a Manifest v3 thing?

People keep recommending Chromium based browsers, as if Google can’t cut them off from further security updates at will, just like they are screwing with AOSP releases …
