Stealth, incognito reddit browsing (f-droid.org)

An awesome app I just discovered for browsing reddit links. Like the rest of you I’ve abandoned reddit but a lot of research on the web takes you to reddit. It’s unsafe to browse the main site. This app is fully incognito and doesn’t require an account. It’s also gorgeous. It could potentially go inactive soon due to an API change. Last update was also in June but they fixed a crash this morning so someone’s still working on it.

Download this and set it to handle reddit links by default. Stay safe, stay ready Comrades!

The functionality is a bit iffy and has been since they killed the API but it’s better than nothing!

Catalyst_A@lemmy.ml on 21 Oct 21:52 collapse

It worked solid for two days and went out this morning. I have continuum setup as a backup. But that requires an API key and user account. It also required me to turn off my VPN for the account setup. So huge knock on continuum. I’m confident they’ll fix the issues with stealth.

artyom@piefed.social on 21 Oct 21:56 collapse

I’m not, it’s been this way for a long time.

Catalyst_A@lemmy.ml on 21 Oct 21:57 next collapse

Well crap.

Catalyst_A@lemmy.ml on 21 Oct 21:57 collapse

Then I agree. It’s better than nothing.

paf@jlai.lu on 21 Oct 22:13 next collapse

Haven’t used it much but as another option, you could try some firefox addon like libredirect so it will open some redlib instance.

artyom@piefed.social on 21 Oct 22:47 next collapse

redlib is always broken too.

paf@jlai.lu on 21 Oct 22:53 collapse

There is many different instances, maybe try another one

artyom@piefed.social on 21 Oct 23:22 collapse

I’ve tried lots of them

z3rOR0ne@lemmy.ml on 22 Oct 01:54 collapse

You can also self host your own redlib instance, tunnel it through wireguard if you don’t want to share your instance publicly, etc.

extremeboredom@lemmy.world on 21 Oct 22:30 next collapse

Is there a link?

Catalyst_A@lemmy.ml on 22 Oct 04:23 collapse

It should be at the top of the post.

UKFilmNerd@feddit.uk on 21 Oct 22:59 next collapse

I used to use this app a lot but I found it started to work less and less. If you follow the right links, there is talk of a new version 3 of the app but I don’t know if that’s still being worked on.

I find that redlib is more reliable for Reddit browsing. It does stop working occasionally but only for a few hours usually.

Catalyst_A@lemmy.ml on 22 Oct 09:39 next collapse

I’m going to keep observing stealth. But it started acting up again so I went back to continuum.

AnnaFrankfurter@lemmy.ml on 22 Oct 09:49 collapse

I’ve been using it for years and yes sometimes VPN causes issue but it is mostly working for me. Can you tell me what exactly is broken? Maybe I can take a look.

undefinedTruth@lemmy.zip on 22 Oct 01:47 next collapse

I use RedReader without an account for years and never had any issues with it. It’s one of the very few third-party apps that gotten a pass during the apiocalypse.

so comes the scrapers i guess

Any recommendations for iOS? I’ve been just using Safari if I need/want to go back to look something up. Although I’m finding a lot of old subs I used to haunt have gone NSFW, and I don’t mean stuff with boobs.

It seems a lot of folks don’t want you to access stuff anymore or at least not easily and I am not setting up anaccount again to do it.

Catalyst_A@lemmy.ml on 22 Oct 19:40 next collapse

My only recommendation is get off of iOS. If that’s an option research Hermit browser and see if anything is similar or of Mullvad browser has anything similar to it on iOS. With iOS you’re going to be relying on browsers and plugins for security and privacy like unlock origin and DNS filters to achieve privacy.

Ultraword@lemmy.ml on 22 Oct 20:30 next collapse

I’m not entirely sure why anyone would willingly stay on iOS in search of further privacy? Like Apple is not as focused on being an advertiser company, but you literally have no control or sight on the code on your iPhone, just as much as a Samsung or something.

hietsu@sopuli.xyz on 23 Oct 18:37 collapse

OpenRed perhaps? Don’t know if it requires an account to browse certain parts or Reddit.

eldavi@lemmy.ml on 22 Oct 19:45 next collapse

how does it compare to using firefox in private mode set to delete all cookies/history before and after i start the session?

Core_of_Arden@lemmy.ml on 22 Oct 22:14 collapse

Firefox is fine in private mode. The other apps are just made for that single purpose. I don’t use reddit that much. Firefox is fine for me.

Catalyst_A@lemmy.ml on 22 Oct 19:47 next collapse

Add the de-centralites and EFF plugins to firefox and you’ll be a lot better off. Can’t say perfect. But it’ll help repel more trackers on the site.

DarkFuture@lemmy.world on 22 Oct 20:10 next collapse

What would be the benefits of this over RedReader? I currently use that app without logging in just to keep up with news and it provides an old Reddit layout experience. Because I refuse to use anything with an even remotely new Reddit layout.

Catalyst_A@lemmy.ml on 22 Oct 22:49 collapse

If Red Reader is working stable for you and you don’t like the newer interface then you’re already using the right one! This one is also still unstable. I went back to Continuum until there’s more updates.
