LOL I didn’t mean it as a condemnation or that it was crap. Just that user counts are something I pay attention to when selecting an extension. Kind of like looking at GitHub stars and recent activity.

What does your extension do? I’ve always wanted to try my hand at one for s&g. Was it difficult?

No worries, I didn’t take it that way.

Mine injects some functionality in a specific government website that I frequently use so it’s a very narrow use-case anyway. I only published it “because why not”. Not going to link it because I did so under my real name to be able to add it to my CV.

The main thing I had to wrap my head around was the difference between content and background scripts. Other than that, of course, reading the steps to publish the add-on at Mozilla.

Understandable. I think we need all the functionality injected into government. LOL

Sounds like I should put it on my reading list for when I’m in bed smoking a bowl before I retire for the evening.

Hard to say. It might as well be a harmless hobby project by a chinese university student, but I would only trust an established foss developer for a browser addon.

TwilightKiddy@programming.dev on 30 Oct 18:12 next collapse

It says in the description that this is a version with minimal changes that exists because uBlock is not available in China. It looks like the source is located here: codeberg.org/lanticy/cBlock

I wouldn’t use it if you have the ability to use the original uBlock, but if you have no other choice, this looks plausable.

hexagonwin@lemmy.sdf.org on 30 Oct 18:16 next collapse

i see no reason to use that over normal ubo. even in china i believe you can get ubo…?

I know. But what about other less tech savy firefox users. I asked is it spam because we can report the addon to firefox.

Cassa@lemmy.blahaj.zone on 30 Oct 19:07 collapse

I would rather trust that mainland china can’t use ublock - even less tech savy users would probably avoid a plugin that’s written in chinese and would end up far lower on search results.

I’d say not to report something like this

the risk to non-tech-savy is minimal, and the potential usecase is very important to any chinese users
