How to Bypass Reddit's VPN Blocking

I don’t like using reddit. But sometimes I have to while looking something up. However, I get this message when I have Mullvad turned on that reads You’ve been blocked by network security.

How do I bypass this? Changing VPN locations doesn’t seem to affect it. I don’t want to turn my VPN off for reddit.

you don’t have to turn your VPN off, they want you to log in

Sometimes it works for me when I change my location using mullvad

There is a tampermonkey script if you google it. It will add the cookie required to bypass like you’re logged in but without you being logged in. If you hit the page it adds the cookie and refreshes. Could probably be made into a pretty self contained extension too

For android, the rdx app works great for occasional lurking

Same on IOS. Using Nord I often have to shuffle my exit node to get around the block. I’ve found connections exiting the UK to be more reliable than ones exiting in the US

It might be fingerprifting your browser. Give TorBrowser a try

Either a frontend or f-droid.org/…/com.tasomaniac.openwith.floss/

Choosing Norway as my location seems to work. Note that I’m using rdx to browse, but the vpn blocking affects it all the same.

Although I found I have problems with CAPTCHA with the .onion version

Does it block you even when you use old.reddit?

On Mac I’ve found Safari gets thru every time for some reason where chrome and Firefox do not. I might have the prevent IP tracking setting enabled or whatever but I never have to turn off my VPN (nor sign in) if the other browsers get flagged. Ymmv.

Throw the URL in tor and it should work fine.

Here’s a way to bypass it with uBlock Origin cybernotes.xyz/osint/Social_Media_Bypasses.html#r…

retrogirl@lemmings.world on 01 Feb 2025 00:22 collapse

Giving this a try. Seems like a consistent method across machines and browsers if it works. Changing servers is a hassle and redirecting traffic to a frontend is not the best solution for privacy.

Wolfie@lemm.ee on 01 Feb 2025 07:57 next collapse

True ^^ Hope it’ll help. Stay safe.

Ooh, one more thing. Reddit has two different blocks. One is this network security one. This is client side and therefore, uBlock can bypass it with ease. There’s another one reddit has, but its server side and it shows up if malicious activity have exited from the same public IP your VPN is originating from. So simply changing your ‘origin’ is a solution in this case. However, the latter type of block is much more rare

if you just want to read, you’re probably better off with using a libreddit or redlib frontend. libredirect firefox addon can automatically use that. that way posts may load faster, you’ll read it on a lightweight site, and reddit won’t be able to track your usage

nickwitha_k@lemmy.sdf.org on 31 Jan 2025 23:22 next collapse

Simplest is to just bypass Reddit.

refalo@programming.dev on 01 Feb 2025 00:36 collapse

Unfortunately I have found it to be one of the highest concentrations of higher-IQ discussions on the Internet wrt broad ranges of topics, at least historically.

riscwarez@feddit.online on 31 Jan 2025 23:38 next collapse

Try connecting to Norway's servers, they don't seem to get that message.

hellfire103@lemmy.ca on 01 Feb 2025 00:53 next collapse

Use redlib.

usr@beehaw.org on 01 Feb 2025 01:43 next collapse

Redlib is a great frontend for it, works great IMO.

For me it’s hit-or-miss with Nord and with Proton. As a matter of fact, works more times than not. This is on Brave browser, just to be clear.

shortwavesurfer@lemmy.zip on 01 Feb 2025 10:11 collapse

Don’t use Reddit.
