Have they become worse along with other companies? Have a friend who insists I use it for shared files.

Not only does Dropbox collect a lot of information about you, it can also share it with whomever it wants, including commercial partners and law enforcement. Being a Dropbox customer means giving the company a large measure of control over your data.
Functionally it’s good and fast. Privacy-wise I would recommend at least encrypting the files before uploading. Cryptomator would help if your friend is willing to use it. VeraCrypt volumes also work, and they sync quickly because Dropbox is smart enough to only update the bits of the volume file that have changed.
If you’re looking for something similar but not US-based, pCloud is good and allows you to save the data in Europe. But encrypt your files there too.
TIL. I wonder what other cloud storage providers do this too.
likely not either (much) better or worse than any other place where you store your files unencrypted on someone else’s computer?
Not sure what exactly you’re asking.
From those that offer big storage for free and have good bandwidth, it’s the only one that enables raw links, so I’m using it to host songs for my private playlist brpunkplayer.neocities.org
Try filen.io. Similar concept as Dropbox but zero knowledge and encrypted. you can easily share direct (expiring (so you choose so)) links to files with or without password.
Who are they backed by? Have they had a third-party audit?
I used to use SpiderOak from way back when they had a free tier, but their product is on life support. Currently, login is broken, so I can’t even get my data out.
They have not had an audit yet but they are planning on it when they finish implementing their new service or something like that. That will be their first audit I believe.

You mean the company that has Condoleezza Rice on its board of directors?
