Is there something like GitHub, but without big tech involvement, no data collection, no ads, open source, and preferably decentralized (maybe Fediverse or even P2P)?

codeberg.org

Jumuta@sh.itjust.works on 20 Sep 19:36 collapse

codeberg is such an obvious choice, i have no idea why people don’t immediately switch from GitHub

snooting@wetshav.ing on 20 Sep 19:55 next collapse

They don't allow for private repos, so it's a non-starter for companies unless they want to self-host.

fluckx@lemmy.world on 20 Sep 20:33 collapse

What? All my codeberg repos are private.

If you do not want anyone (apart from your fellow collaborators) to see your repositories, mark your repository as “Private”.

docs.codeberg.org/…/repo-permissions/

Lazycog@sopuli.xyz on 20 Sep 23:37 collapse

There are terms and conditions for private people too regarding this (read next two sections): docs.codeberg.org/getting-started/faq/#before-i-s…

I love codeberg but can’t move my private, non-foss repos there. FOSS repos for sure though.

Jumuta@sh.itjust.works on 21 Sep 03:02 collapse

it’s very understandable though, and 100MB is a lot of data

eager_eagle@lemmy.world on 21 Sep 03:32 collapse

it’s a lot of code, not a lot of data. If any repo has binary files you’ll most likely need to store it somewhere else as there’s not even an option to pay that used storage.

JumpyWombat@lemmy.ml on 20 Sep 20:00 next collapse

Because not everyone works on free software (read their FAQ)

eager_eagle@lemmy.world on 20 Sep 20:11 collapse

they also have a limit of 100 repos, so I can’t even migrate everything I have on github

pHr34kY@lemmy.world on 20 Sep 19:28 next collapse

Yes, git.

irmadlad@lemmy.world on 20 Sep 19:49 next collapse

Selfhosted Gitea ?

DieserTypMatthias@lemmy.ml on 20 Sep 20:01 next collapse

Don’t know if GitLab counts as alternative (it has no bullshit according to Brave Shields, and AFAIK they’re independent)

fajre@lemmy.world on 21 Sep 01:14 collapse

Brave has already had several leaks and a history of selling data, that’s why I switched to LibreWolf.

m33@lemmy.zip on 20 Sep 20:35 next collapse

Probably codeberg, or gitea instance somewhere

SethranKada@lemmy.ca on 20 Sep 21:28 next collapse

Check out Forgejo, it’s what codeberg uses as far as im aware. They’re the only ones even attempting to put the fediverse into git

lepinkainen@lemmy.world on 20 Sep 21:43 next collapse

Sourcehut: sr.ht

+1 for Sourcehut

Same as in the other thread, I’m going to recommend fossil-scm.org

Works for me.

elias_griffin@lemmy.world on 20 Sep 22:55 next collapse

Fossil requires its own download client (not git) and like the other guy said Forgejo only accepts certain licenses, Gitea is Google which is obviously a no-go.

Gogs abandoned, Kallithea abandoned.

Realistically that leaves GitBucket github.com/gitbucket/gitbucket and Tuleap docs.tuleap.org/install.html

elias_griffin@lemmy.world on 20 Sep 23:12 next collapse

Can’t edit. Gogs I’m happy to see did receive security fixes 3 months ago. Also Gitea being a no-go…get it, no-go…hahah.

It is good and proper to hate Google services.

utopiah@lemmy.ml on 22 Sep 09:19 collapse

Gitea is Google which is obviously a no-go.

Please explain how “Gitea is Google”

yogthos@lemmy.ml on 21 Sep 00:12 next collapse

Radicle is really worth checking out radicle.xyz

hellfire103@lemmy.ca on 21 Sep 02:29 next collapse

NOTE: URLs written in italics are unofficial/self-hosted instances of their respective version control systems.

  • Forgejo (codeberg.org) and Gitea (tildegit.org) are great.
  • sourcehut (sr.ht) is fantastic, and also offers Mercurial hosting.
  • source.community (gemini://source.community) is interesting.
  • Fossil (code.rosaelefanten.org) is also interesting, and doesn’t use Git.
  • Savannah (savannah.nongnu.org) is the version control system used by the FSF and the GNU project. Uses CVS and Git, with ViewVC and cgit frontends. You must make regular commits, otherwise your account may be pruned.
ObsidianZed@lemmy.world on 21 Sep 18:02 next collapse

I recently came across another forgejo instance: lavaforge.org. Seems decent.

fajre@lemmy.world on 21 Sep 18:03 collapse

interesting!

utopiah@lemmy.ml on 22 Sep 09:32 next collapse

I run my own Gitea instance at git.benetou.fr but I admit didn’t look much at the federated aspect, yet.

Sadly I just checked forum.gitea.com/c/federation/10 and despite few attempts, e.g. nlnet.nl/project/Gitea/ and eventually potentially upstreaming via forgejo forgejo.org/2023-01-10-answering-forgejo-federati… that does not seem to be usable right now.

I’m checking forgefed.org which I learned about via checking federation on Gitea and it looks nice, in theory, but until I see an actual list of instances federated together I’ll just applaud the effort from afar.

utopiah@lemmy.ml on 23 Sep 08:27 collapse

FWIW that lead to discussion in codeberg.org/ForgeFed/ForgeFed/issues/77

dont@lemmy.world on 22 Sep 09:56 collapse

radicle.xyz is not fediverse, but P2P
