Researchers investigating Discord’s age-verification checks say they discovered an exposed frontend belonging to Persona, the identity-verification vendor used by Discord. It revealed a far more expansive surveillance and financial intelligence stack than a simple “teen safety” tool.
While what he says is broadly correct and I like that he makes it simple and understandable. I would like to add that:
Companies aren’t ‘subject’ to this because they are forced by government. Companies actively lobbied for these laws so that they can say ‘the government forces us’ since the lobbying is WAY easier (and behind more closed doors) than actually implementing such a data harvesting tool as a single company.
His wording makes it sound like ‘big brother wants your data’ and while the gov profits immensely from this harvesting as well, the companties primarily got this thing going by lobbying for it, like meta lobbying for verification laws wayyy ahead of this implementation wave we are seeing.
