Are there more 'private' launchers for pixel phones?

Hello šŸ‘‹

Disclaimer I would switch to try grapheneos if I could currently my phone from Verizon apparently can not have itā€™s bootloader unlocked soā€¦

I am looking for launcher suggestions that are maybe less intrusive if thatā€™s possible. I mostly just want to get rid of the Google search at the bottom and the ā€˜at a glanceā€™ at the top of the home page I canā€™t figure it out.

Edit: forgot my phone model ā€˜Pixel 8 Proā€™

Yes, there are many options.

I saved a thread a while back when I was looking for a new launcher too.

Switching the launcher will almost do ZERO for your privacy. Just to let you know.

Anyhow, you could check out the ā€œF-Droidā€ App Store, which is populated with the most privacy respecting open source apps out there. It also has some launchers.

Or you could at least check apps on Exodus for trackers.

I figured it wouldnā€™t do much or anything for privacy but figured it would be worth an ask. Thanks

LawnChair

Cris16228@lemmy.today on 27 Feb 15:09 next collapse

I wish it had folders in the app drawer

land@lemmy.ml on 27 Feb 19:31 collapse

Yeah, it lacks a lot of features. Feeds donā€™t work either.

Cris16228@lemmy.today on 27 Feb 20:02 collapse

Not a fan of feeds and I donā€™t need them but I get its annoying for some people. I canā€™t find a good launcher with folders, up to date and with some customization

land@lemmy.ml on 27 Feb 20:38 collapse

Most foss launchers Iā€™ve tried are terrible. LawnChair is the only one that stood out the most.

Cris16228@lemmy.today on 28 Feb 00:14 collapse

I used apt.izzysoft.de/fdroid/index/ā€¦/com.saggitt.omega before realizing itā€™s 2 years old. The only one Iā€™ve found with folders

land@lemmy.ml on 28 Feb 00:59 collapse

You mean folders as in sections?

  • Games
  • Social
  • Productivity

Something like that?

Cris16228@lemmy.today on 28 Feb 10:23 collapse

Folders in the app drawer or app list (depends on how you call it)

Blxter@lemmy.zip on 27 Feb 23:39 next collapse

I will try lawnshair first to see how I like thanks šŸ‘ looks good

If you want something minimalistic, you can try mine: Mere Launcher

ddash@lemmy.dbzer0.com on 27 Feb 13:56 next collapse

If you want something completely different check out the KISS launcher or Kvaesito.

aprehendedmerlin@lemmy.dbzer0.com on 27 Feb 14:10 next collapse

I know Itā€™s not FOSS but I love Niagara Launcher maybe give it a shot and if you want to you can just cut off itā€™s internet access

perishthethought@lemm.ee on 27 Feb 14:45 next collapse

I use Discreet Launcher on the same phone

vincent-falzon.com

Crampi@sh.itjust.works on 27 Feb 17:50 next collapse

There is a 3rd party launcher issue on Pixels that will some times freeze the UI. It has to do with the use of the recents menu. It has been the bane of my existence on my pixel 6 for 18 months. Didnā€™t used to do it. It could be easily fixed by Google but they wonā€™t.

As a counterpoint, Iā€™ve been using Lawnchair on my Pixel 4, 6, and 8, on stock, LineageOS, and GrapheneOS, and never had this happen to me.

Codilingus@sh.itjust.works on 28 Feb 06:11 collapse

Same, with their current 14 beta.

reddeadhead@awful.systems on 27 Feb 20:00 collapse

This happens on my Pixel as well. I forget which launcher I use but I keep the icon on my homescreen so I can just hold it to get the app info and force stop it.

JohnnyWishbone@lemmy.world on 27 Feb 20:10 collapse

I set up a tasker intent that launches the pixel launcher then my kills it after 1 second followed by a restart of total launcher. This works well Got it as a quick settings tile. I use total launcher but it does it with lawn chair as well. Factory reset didnā€™t help.

IrritableOcelot@beehaw.org on 28 Feb 07:27 next collapse

Kvaesito is awesome.

MaddestMax@lemmy.world on 28 Feb 08:13 next collapse

Iā€™ve been happily using mLauncher. Itā€™s about as minimal as they come. Iā€™ve got zero on my screens. github.com/DroidWorksStudio/mLauncher

After trying out many different app launchers on f-droid Kvaesito is what I found to be the best. Kvaesito is very good and is what I use it allows you to swipe down and eminently start searching for apps.

My biggest problem with it (and itā€™s a big one) is ocasionally it will just freeze and stop working until I lock the phone and turn it on again. (maybe you wonā€™t have this problem just try it out)

Blxter@lemmy.zip on 28 Feb 12:27 collapse

Will do. Many people talk about launcher freezing thanks
