I have an old android s3 mini and not using it for anything feels like a waste

You could install postmarketOS on it and use it to run Pi-hole

Nerorero@lemmy.blahaj.zone on 06 Sep 2023 20:04 collapse

Damn, I don’t think my phone is supported by postmarket. The galaxy s3 is, but the s3 mini is not listed.

Gurfaild@feddit.de on 06 Sep 2023 20:20 collapse

I think the features you’d need for Pi-hole should work: wiki.postmarketos.org/…/Samsung_Galaxy_S_III_mini…

Nerorero@lemmy.blahaj.zone on 06 Sep 2023 20:28 collapse

Ooh, thanks!

Wait, I have the gt i8200n

The features are the same, so it should still work, right?

Gurfaild@feddit.de on 07 Sep 2023 09:52 collapse

That one uses a different SoC, so it has a different wiki page: wiki.postmarketos.org/…/Samsung_Galaxy_SIII_mini_…

it says that audio doesn’t work, does that mean it won’t have sound? do you know if i can still instal Termux on a postmarketos phone?

Gurfaild@feddit.de on 07 Sep 2023 12:47 collapse

I think that means that the built-in speakers and microphone won’t work, but a USB DAC with external speakers and Bluetooth audio devices might work.

You can’t install Termux but you don’t need to - postmarketOS already is a Linux distro, so you can do anything you could do with Termux

Ah, I see. Thanks!

Piratebox

Nerorero@lemmy.blahaj.zone on 06 Sep 2023 21:01 collapse

Could you explain what piratebox exactly is? I don’t really understand it

DieterParker@feddit.de on 07 Sep 2023 12:23 collapse

Strangers can connect to your piratebox and download whatever files (not neccessarily pirated) you put on it. Movies, music, books etc.
A piratebox has no internet connection and in order to browse it one has to connect directly to it’s network. Think about your favourite bar or your toilet at work having a network with no internet access, that let’s you browse fresh warez every time you visit.
I think you can even grant upload rights and make it a public dead mailbox for warez.

Nerorero@lemmy.blahaj.zone on 07 Sep 2023 12:29 next collapse

what? that’s insane. and i can look at everything others have in their piratebox? but how do i connect to the network without wifi?

DieterParker@feddit.de on 07 Sep 2023 12:46 collapse

No internet, just local wifi network. Pirateboxes aren’t meshed.

alex_02@infosec.pub on 07 Sep 2023 17:21 collapse

Piratebox is discontinued so it won’t get any new updates, but there are a bunch of other projects you can do like setup a file server and share it with an open ap. Just make sure to secure the pi itself and whatnot.

DieterParker@feddit.de on 07 Sep 2023 19:50 collapse

What a shame
To be honest, i read about it a long time ago, but haven’t used the software, just liked the concept because it’s so seductively simple: random anonymous device, no internet connection, no isp, no trouble. Perfect deniability.
Only lower level: switching drives 😂

alex_02@infosec.pub on 07 Sep 2023 19:54 collapse

Well… I think it is discontinued but there are mix things. Maintaining projects is just difficult. It is a nice software.

I have an old Moto X4 that has done duty as an octoprint server, and now works as the screen for my camera drone.

alex_02@infosec.pub on 07 Sep 2023 17:23 collapse

Lots of projects… you can use it as a gps module, security camera, root it and use it and run kali nethunter on it, etc.

I use my nexus 5X I bought off of ebay for nethunter and my other androids I use as a spare smartphone I use for a smaller kit.
