Hey, I’m wondering what everyone uses for searching. I personally use a combination of these sites: mwmbl.org search.marginalia.nu greppr.org wiby.me

For main driving I use duckduckgo

I just found this blog post, it pretty much reviews all available search engines: seirdy.one/…/search-engines-with-own-indexes/

DDG is my primary engine, but I’ve had good results with Brave Search too.

I’ve heard good things about Qwant, but unfortunately it requires you to turn ad block off, so no go for me on that one.

I prefere to use metasearch engines that get results from other engines, i used to use SearXNG but currently im using 4get you can host your own instance or use a public one.

I tried them and it gives me a captcha every single time. I have no idea what a ‘fumo plushie’ is so picking four of them to get my results makes it a non starter

DarkNoul@feddit.nl on 13 Apr 2024 17:51 next collapse

Check the instances, some of them don’t have captcha

You probably had to click on the animal which has no fur. For example click on the one turtle image as opposed to the five cow images.

Never heard of Greppr, (t y) did a test search with best private search engine showing this at hit number 10 : lemmy.ml/comment/121842 which echoes your comment about a blog post in this thread :-)

I am using kagi and like it so far

I am also using Kagi. It’s a paid service but I like their philosophy so I’m happy to pay.

I like Stract, I have it enabled in Searx though, so I rarely use their site.

Search.brave.com

Ddg is just bing, so its trash

LucidBoi@lemmy.dbzer0.com on 12 Apr 2024 18:03 next collapse

I use SearXNG. It’s been treating me very well and I’ve only had to use Google to get a certain result 1 time in the past 6 months.

fubbernuckin@lemmy.world on 12 Apr 2024 18:54 collapse

My searxng instance gives me Google results. Maybe it misses the point but it’s nice.

LucidBoi@lemmy.dbzer0.com on 12 Apr 2024 19:34 collapse

You can turn it off in the settings. Or, just use a VPN or SOCKS5 proxy. with it and you’d be good, while still having the benefits of Google’s engine.

fubbernuckin@lemmy.world on 12 Apr 2024 20:43 collapse

Sorry, i meant that i like the Google results, and i turned them on Even if it misses the point of using an alternative because it’s just better than Google alone.

independantiste@sh.itjust.works on 12 Apr 2024 18:48 next collapse

Kagi is pretty good, even if it is on the expensive side. The results are pretty good, and there are many useful features. The results are lacking for more local or if you speak multiple languages and you wish to have local results, you will need to set it manually to your area.

Sims@lemmy.ml on 12 Apr 2024 19:02 next collapse

With a browser addon LibRedirect you can redirect all kind of sites to their privacy friendly alternatives. Google have 5 alternative backends (searx, searxng, whoogle, librey, 4get).

Alternatively you could try some of the new AI engines like perplexity.ai , but they will likely soon track you as much as google…

lautan@lemmy.ca on 14 Apr 2024 14:59 collapse

Thanks, it looks really useful

foremanguy92_@lemmy.ml on 12 Apr 2024 23:46 next collapse

Just use SearXng, it’s the best choice because it’s using google and bing datas. Go to SearX.space

piracysails@lemm.ee on 13 Apr 2024 12:41 next collapse

If you by any chance use mullvad, you could try Leta.

PS. It’s proxied google results.

supangle@lemmy.wtf on 13 Apr 2024 19:23 collapse

i use searx
