with the simple tools suite being sold to a purveyor of non-foss things, remind me of your favorite lists of recommended apps? i was using simple contacts and am not immediately sure of a good replacement. i would want one without internet permissions, which was why i disabled the google builtin.

Netguard firewall can block the internet access for apps that shouldn’t need it

TrackerControl on FDroid can even block trackers in apps that need internet.

This one is new to me. Looks solid, testing it out now. Thanks for sharing!

it’s perhaps interesting to see what existing apps ZipoApps has on the Android Play Store.

OpenContacts or Koler on F-Droid

Last I tried koler, it lacked the feature to go back to a call after going to your homescreen / any other app, has that changed?

Cheradenine@sh.itjust.works on 03 Dec 2023 10:09 collapse

I don’t know, I have never tried it.

how do you even sell an open source program

jjlinux@lemmy.ml on 09 Dec 2023 15:37 collapse

You sell your name and code. And since the code is yours, you can change the license type as well, which I’m certain is exactly what the new owners will do. Anyone can still fork the open source code and continue the work with a different name.

The moment I found out about this, they all got replaced for other apps. Don’t get me wrong, I hope the dev got paid handsomely for this. Those are the people that make our lives easier by allowing us to move away from big tech by empowering us to actually own our data. Hopefully the dev will take the bag of cash, say thank you, and have no monetary concerns for the rest of his life, and then, for fun, create another suite of apps.

Edit: Downvoting my own comment because @adam_b opened my eyes to some facts I did not consider.

I didn’t look at this from that standpoint, and you’re right. Not the part of the user’s, since the apps don’t really use any login themselves (that I’m aware of), but the contributors, that was a VERY low blow to them. Thanks for bringing that up. I’m going to down vote my own comment 😂.

Simple apps were bought out. See FossifyOrg for upcoming forks.
