I'm not gonna lie, this "dumb phone" is awkwardly close to how my daily driver has looked for the better part of a decade.

How is it dumb if it is running LOS?

theunknownmuncher@lemmy.world on 22 Jan 2025 23:06 next collapse

Lmao “I didn’t install the Google Play Store so my phone is now a minimalist dumbphone” ???

haverholm@kbin.earth on 23 Jan 2025 07:17 next collapse

I know, right? I guess they mean "free of distracting bloat".

unwarlikeExtortion@lemmy.ml on 23 Jan 2025 07:42 collapse

Probably “dumb” in the sense it doesm’t actively spy on you. Which is a god-awful definition of dumb.

Personally, I’d go with non-malicious, shortened to non-mal which basically loops back to “normal”.

Steve@communick.news on 22 Jan 2025 23:19 next collapse

I don’t think a “Dumb Phone” means what they think it means.

juli@lemmy.world on 23 Jan 2025 03:23 next collapse

“made” is doing a lot of heavy lifting here, they “modified” it.

haverholm@kbin.earth on 23 Jan 2025 07:39 collapse

Yeah, the honest title would be "I evicted Google and I can just use my phone like I want now".

So its lineage OS with a minimalist launcher. This is click bait.

I mean, it's on HowToGeek, so I'll generously think of it as onboarding another few people to custom ROMs...

superkret@feddit.org on 23 Jan 2025 07:43 collapse

I “made” a “dumb phone” like that too, using a normal Android, Universal Android Debloater, FDroid, Fossify and the Simple Launcher.

For my next project, I’ll turn my laptop into a typewriter by disconnecting the WiFi.

haverholm@kbin.earth on 23 Jan 2025 08:19 collapse

Sounds low effort! The real way of turning your laptop into a typewriter, of course, is to install Linux without a desktop environment and run an editor from command line /s

At least the author of the article could be arsed flashing a custom ROM 😉
