Google is making its Search more centred around AI, turning it into a conversation.

Besides being a worse experience, the websites from which it sources its information are losing all traffic and recognition.

Recommend a list of alternatives:

  • Kagi - Paid but better experience than Google
  • Ecosia - Similar experience while supporting a good cause
  • Qwant - Increasingly unique results and building a EU-first index
  • DuckDuckGo - Privacy-focused search, but quality of results may vary

I guess this will kill startpage

snowydroopz@lemmy.world on 20 May 16:19 next collapse

I hope not, i really really love startpage

Why will this kill startpage? I only just found it because it’s the default for waterfox and I’m quite happy with it. DDG has been getting worse and worse

Startpage uses google search. I think they use the paid API service, the question is whether that service will continue after these changes.

I started using Ecosia after noticing DDG’s downward turn. So far I’ve enjoyed it. It has problems, but I think those problems are just what passes for the internet these days…

Startpage stopped working during the very same outage that took bing down. Maybe on 9 Oct 2024

For a few months I’ve been using local instances of searxng. I’ve got it running on my laptop and on Termux on my phone. It’s been fine for me. It’s not always the quickest, but I’m ok with it.

Self hosting searxng was the best decision I ever made for search engines. Just point it to a bunch of different engines of my choice and use it. I seriously no longer ever find myself with the old habit of “ugh okay maybe I’ll get better results in [insert other engines] this time”… Probably cause it’s using them all.

I like the hostnames plugin too. I can rewrite URLs (for example x to xcancel) and also give higher or lower priority to certain domains (or remove them completely.)

A companion read to this article, where the blogger went to the same conference, “google I/O”, and then went on the one dedicated to advertisers (same place, just de day after), “Marketing Live”. Hang on to something solid, it’s bad. Like, really.

Peace be with you. 🌹So, I’ve been doing without Google for over a year now and use Mojeek. It takes some getting used to, and isn’t as good as well-known search engines, but it’s 100% free from Google and Bing. It has is own crawler and index.
