TL;DR: They probably haven’t actually contacted the authorities and it was likely made up by the customer service representative.
But there is a growing realisation that through age verification they are giving Apple and Google the power to decide who can access web services and who can’t and they’re clearly using it to make life difficult for anyone who doesn’t let them have full control of their personal devices.
Most people don’t use GrapheneOS to commit crimes. They use it to regain control over the device that they own and give the middle finger to all that data collection big tech is doing behind everyone’s backs.
Either way, it’s a bad move by the exec. Privacy focused folks are already against forced age verification rollout by companies and now this…also, UK ministers are pushing to amend the Online Safety Act, proposing plans that would hold device vendors like Apple and Google legally liable for children accessing mature content. The law would threaten tech executives with jail sentences of up to five years if their platforms or operating systems fail to proactively block mature content…this will further accelerate forced age verification methods such as selfie, ID proof etc…which is especially bad in today’s day and age due to drastic oncrease in data breaches
